Learning Reading

Reading fluency is the ability to read text accurately and quickly. Reading fluency bridges word decoding and comprehension. Sight reading is the first stepping stone in reading fluency. The ability for your child to immediately recognize words on sight and comprehend the meaning of that word, this is the skills that make up reading fluency. You can assist with reading fluency by reading aloud to your child. Also teaching your child some common words that really do not follow the phonic rules for spelling can also add to increasing your child's reading fluency.

In the past decade reading centers such as Huntington Learning Center became popular as parents began to understand that their children's needs were more than what the core curriculum at their school had to offer. In recent years parents have how begun to turn to online reading centers for two main reasons, convenience and cost. Online reading centers such as Time4Learning, can be accessed with full lesson plans, games and activities from the convenience of your home. The site is safe and secure so you know that your child is not going to be exposed to any "questionable" material that can be found on the Internet.

The cost of the reading center can be a great hindrance for many families today on a budget. Centers such as Huntington are usually a franchise so prices and hours of operation vary. Many online programs can be found for as low as twenty dollars a month and this may fit better into the family budget.

Parents need to keep in mind that at times learning reading can be a very slow process for their child while at other times they will seem to grow by leaps and bounds. Learning reading is a process built on many skills and steps. If the steps are taken out of sequence this can be frustrating to the student and the parent.

Time4Learning had put together a "reading pyramid" to help parents understand these steps in learning reading.

The Ontario Ministry of Education financially supported a report by the Early Reading Expert Panel entitled "Early Reading Strategy". The reading strategy panel consisted of Teachers, consultants, principals, school board administrators, academics and researchers from English, French, and Aboriginal communities. One of the key themes for this report stated "There is a critical window of opportunity from the ages of four to seven for children to learn to read. Research on early reading difficulties is very clear: children who continue to experience reading difficulties in Grade 3 seldom catch up later. It makes sense to detect problems early in order to avoid the escalation of problems later."

Time4Learning's reading program allows you to monitor your child's progress so you will know if your child is having any difficulty. They provide lessons that are age appropriate and skill approximate for your child. Lessons can be taken in sequence or used to supplement an already existing core curriculum. The Founder and President, John Edelson, has a deep interest in encouraging the positive impact of technology on family life and improving the use of technology for education.
