Reading Skills
Phonemic awareness, phonics , reading comprehension, vocabulary and reading fluency: These are the five major area that contribute to having the best reading skills possible. Time4Learning's reading program offers fun, computer reading programs, which helps teach and reinforce reading skills at home through educational activities and learning games.

With all the academic articles and articles that tell parents that all they need to do is fill their homes with reading rich materials and read to their children for 20 minutes daily, it is no wonder that parents find teaching reading to be one of the most challenging and confusing areas of their child's education. Parents need information that simply summarizes the current thinking on teaching reading and helps parents understand what the expectations are at each level of education.

The reading pyramid helps to give parents a better understanding and direction in developing a plan to teach reading. The reading skills are organized using the NCLB (No Child Left Behind) system. The pyramid also shows the age at which your child should be understanding and comprehending the five major areas that contribute to good reading skills.

Parents need to keep in mind that at times learning to read can be a very slow process for their child while at other times they will seem to grow by leaps and bounds. The key to success is sequence. Just as a baby first learns to roll over, then crawl and then walk, students need to learn the basics first and then add to each step along the way. When teaching reading if the steps are taken out of sequence this can be frustrating to the student and the parent. That is why Time4Learning has developed The Reading Skills Pyramid. And while most children do follow this sequence, be aware that each child is different and that there are a great number of variations

A reading skill resource site we recommend for parents to check out is at the University of Connecticut "Literacy Web".
