Spelling

We probably all remember spelling bees while in school but did you practice spelling as a preschooler? Studies have shown that parents can start a preschool reading program and it can be very beneficial. Preschool spelling programs consist of a weekly spelling test beginning with two letter words to start then the list can be expanded by adding word families. Preschool spelling games, spelling worksheets, and spelling bee activities should also become a part of a regular preschool spelling program]

By starting a preschool spelling program and sticking with it, you will prepare your child for kindergarten spelling. Kindergarten spelling progresses from the two letters words into three letter consonant-vowel-consonant words, and become more complex. Things such as changing a word by adding a silent "E" to the end of the word your child already knows, or introducing the long vowel sound with double vowels can be added to the spelling curriculum.

Kindergarten spelling games, spelling worksheets, and spelling bee activities teach kindergarten spelling skills. Time4Learning kindergarten spelling curriculum uses fun, kindergarten spelling activities to build a solid spelling foundation.

Another great site for spelling games is called Learning Games for Kids. This site states, "Learning Games are a great way to build the foundation skills that today's elementary school curriculum requires. These learning games are fun. These learning games teach important skills for preschool and elementary school kids. Children will themselves work to develop their focus and skills with these learning games" These spelling games are fun and interactive and add greatly to the spelling curriculum you currently use.

Department of Education, Tasmania, School Education Division states. "Students should be encouraged to reflect on their learning and the strategies they apply in the spelling process". They also state that these spelling strategies, "be explicitly taught and constantly referred to in the classroom". They state also that is not only important to teach about the words but also just as important to teach about spelling strategies. This enables students to have a plan of action and figure out new words when they come across them.

Some spelling strategies might include tracing the word, thinking of other words with the same letter pattern and analyze the words into syllables. There are many more, these are just a few and you will need to help your child find the best spelling strategies that work for him or her.

You can help your child excel in spelling.
